Joining EPCNYC

The Estate Planning Council of New York City accepts new individual and firm members throughout the year. Both individuals and firms interested in membership are required to submit an application for consideration.

For Individual Memberships, the interested person must complete the application and have a member in good  standing sponsor their application. Once an application is received, the prospective member is interviewed, a recommendation is made to the Board of Directors regarding the individual’s membership, and a vote is taken.

For Firm Memberships, no interview is conducted, but the Board does evaluate whether the firm is involved in estate planning through its members or associates, or is involved in a business that supports or supplements the services of estate planning professionals.

Only the individuals or firms that meet the criteria for admissions will be accepted into the Council.

PLEASE NOTE: We are currently restructuring firm memberships and will not be accepting applications at this time.

The Membership Process

Individuals interested in membership in EPCNYC are required to submit an application which has been endorsed by an active member in good standing. The applicant is assigned to an interviewer and is invited to the next Council event. The second year Directors from each of the disciplines are assigned the task of interviewing the prospective new members. The second year Directors only interview prospective members of the same discipline.

Through this informal conversation with the interviewer, the prospective members interest in the Council, their background in estate planning, and their interest in actively participating in the Council is gauged. Following the interview, the interviewer is asked to submit a summary of the interview, and their recommendation to the Board. This information is used by the Board to make their vote on the applicant's membership into the Council.

Admission Criteria

According to the EPCNYC Bylaws, members are divided into four disciplines: Accountancy; Banking and Allied Financial Services; Law; Life Insurance and Financial Planning; and Affiliated. Each applicant is asked to indicate their discipline when applying for membership. The principal qualifications for admission to membership are experience, background, interest, and current involvement in estate planning. Each discipline has their own criteria as well.
