September 2018 Evening Program

Join EPCNYC for the First Evening Program of the
2018-2019 Membership Year

It's hard to believe how quickly this summer is going by! If you have missed the learning and networking at the EPCNYC events, you don't have to wait much longer. The first of four Evening Programs is next month!

Join us Thursday, September 13th to hear Paul S. Lee, J.D., LL.M. as he talks about "Putting It On & Taking It Off: Managing Tax Basis Today (For Tomorrow)". Click Here for More Information and to Register.

For this event, we will be trying something new! We will have the cocktail reception for a full hour in the beginning of the evening, 5:30 – 6:30 PM. This will be followed by the presentation. Instead of a dinner, we will be doing heavy hors d'oeuvres during the first hour with desserts during the presentation. It is our hope that with this format, there will be more time for valuable networking and better focus during the presentation. After the program, we would greatly appreciate your feedback on if you think we should do this again.

Also, this is a great time to propose a friend or colleague into membership! Prior to this event, the Board will vote in new members. If you know someone who may be interested, have them send in an application by August 30^th. And don’t forget, if you propose two new members this membership year, you receive a $100 American Express gift card! Help us to reach our goal of 60 for 60 - adding 60 new members in our 60th birthday year.

A letter from the Estate Planners Day Committee Chair

I want to take a moment and tell you how excited I am for our upcoming premier event of the year - Estate Planner's Day - which is taking place April 27th, here at the Union League Club. As a reminder, there is a reduced fee for those who register before 3/31. This is available for BOTH members and non-members.

Planning a day of this magnitude over the course of a year of massive flux, change and upheaval is no small feat. We’ve seen a complete changeover in leadership in Washington along with a new set of priorities and goals. So much is still up in the air, and where we head on so many issues integral to our respective practices, like tax reform, fiscal policy and the interest rate environment. To that end, we stayed focused on the fundamental wiring of collective practices.

I learned quickly coming into the world of Estate Planning some 17 years ago that this was a community like no other. We are the leaders, the counselors, the caretakers, and at times the naysayers. We are often tasked with tackling the broadest range of seemingly conflicting issues concerning our clients’ wealth and assets along with life's burning questions and fears surrounding death - understanding the emotions and behaviors that come with that process - whilst being ever mindful that our strategies and solutions offered are of the highest caliber. Yet at the same time, we are the hand holders…the pillars of strength when our clients find themselves in emotional valleys.

We pour over text, pick each other's brains, sit through countless hours of continuing education. At times we forgo our own time, health and families as the hours get absorbed by the cares and concerns and problems of our clients.

As Nelson Mandela once said "A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination"

That’s who we are and that’s what we bring to the table every day. Not just paid advisors, or tax experts, but integral players in our clients’ most important decisions, the ones that affect their businesses, their families and their legacies!

It is an honor and a privilege to be part of our family and to work alongside so many talented and caring people. I trust this day will bring you insight, inspiration and education that will enhance your practices and further enrich the lives of those we are called upon to serve. It is one of the 365 days in a year we get a chance to do that for each other.
