  EPCNYC President's Message - September 2017

Ruth Flynn Raftery, JD, CPA | Tax Director

Hello everyone,

As president, the three themes that I’d like to focus on for this year are:

Collaboration - The unique thing about the Estate Planning Council is our multi-disciplinary membership.  Regardless of discipline, we all play an important role in the estate planning process. When we collaborate with the other disciplines, we can truly achieve the shared goal of doing what is best for our clients.

NAEPC - I am pleased to announce that we have been chosen by the National Association of Estate Planning Councils (NAEPC) as one of the 2017 recipients of the Council of Excellence Award.  There are over 260 NAEPC member Councils and this award recognizes those councils that NAEPC feels are positioned toward success.  Our council’s alignment with NAEPC will help all of us in building and growing our national network.

Change - The increasing estate tax exemption, potential law changes, longer life expectancies and technology are changing so much about what we do and how we do it.  As a council we need to adapt to the changing needs of our members.

As I sit down to write this message, I am simultaneously working on a new client that perfectly illustrates these themes.  The information we received from the client was incomplete and although it looked like the client had created trusts and made gifts in the recent past, the last gift tax return that I was given was from 2003.  I found an email in the file regarding an old insurance policy and was happy to find the name of someone I know well as the Insurance / financial advisor.  So I picked up the phone and called him.  He gave me the name of the attorney who I also know, so I called him. We are bringing in one of my NAEPC contacts in Florida and, long story short, we are all working together to get the client’s estate planning up to date.

I look forward to an amazing 2017-2018 year of programming and collaboration, and getting to know all of you.   As the example above illustrates, the client is always better served when their advisors work together.

Best regards,
